Crow Dance:
This candid portrait of a young Native American boy, from the Crow nation; anxiously awaits the judges' decision on a traditional Crow dance competition; the contest is part of the Crow Fair Celebration, Pow Wow, and Rodeo. The Crow Nation, called the Apsáalooke in their Siouan language, are Native American peoples, who in ancient times lived in the Yellowstone River valley; extending from present-day Wyoming, through Montana, and into North Dakota where it joins the Missouri River. The Crow Fair was created in 1904 by an Indian government agent to bring the Crow Tribe of Indians into modern society. It welcomes all Native American tribes of the Great Plains to its festivities, functioning as a giant family reunion under the 'Big Sky.' It is currently the largest Northern Native American gathering attracting nearly 45,000 spectators and participants each year.
