Monument Valley:
This image is the classic Monument Valley view at sunset. This scene was used in the opening sequence of John Ford's 1939 landmark Western Stagecoach, starring Claire Trevor; and in his debut role, John Wayne. Monument Valley, a red-sand desert region on the Arizona-Utah border, is known for the towering sandstone buttes shown here. The park, frequently a filming location for Western movies, is accessed by a 17-mile looped Valley Drive. This image, captured from the area known as John Wayne's Point, now the location of the 'View Hotel,' a Navajo owned business opened in December 2008. In the day, this was Wayne's favorite location to rest between movie takes—he would sit in silence and view the valley.
