Stolperstein:
A Stolperstein is a 3.94 x 3.94-inch concrete cube bearing a brass plate inscribed with the name and life dates of victims of Nazi extermination or persecution. The stones are placed outside the homes where the victims used to live. The Stolpersteine (Tripping Stone) or directly translated: ‘stone over which you would trip;’ is a memorial project conceived by German artist Gunter Demnig which began in 1992. Small commemorative plaques laid in the ground are reminders of the fate of the people who were persecuted, murdered, deported, or expelled to concentration camps in the time of National Socialism. Since it’s conception, the project has spread from Germany to Austria, Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Belgium, Ukraine, Italy, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, France, Croatia, Luxembourg, Russia, Switzerland, Romania, Greece, Spain, Belarus, and Lithuania, in that order. The Stolpersteine is the largest memorial project in the world; and is still growing.
