Those Pesky Punks:
Piccadilly Circus, London, 2007: Young teens pose for tourists for £5.00 a picture, dressed as obnoxious Punks. Tourists are more than happy to pay for an ill-mannered pose and rude gestures directed towards their camera—in the second city to give birth to the Punk era between 1974 - 1976—the first being New York City.
Piccadilly Circus is a road junction and public space of London's West End in the City of Westminster. It was built in 1819 to connect Regent Street with Piccadilly. In this context, a circus, from the Latin word meaning 'circle,' is a round open space at a street junction. Surrounded by several notable buildings in the area, including the London Pavilion and Criterion Theatre, the area is famous for its street performers, panhandlers, and the homeless—all seeking handouts.
Now to be clear, I have never considered this anything more than a mediocre image. I thought it funny at the time; it's a fond reminder of a period in time—more importantly, I paid £5.00 for it!
